The Newest Addition to the Des Moines Bar Scene

INDIE HOUSE wrapped up 2024 with a commercial project that hit close to home. Located along Locust Street in the East Village, The Contrary made its debut this winter and has hit the ground running as the newest night life spot offering superior cocktails, live music and DJ sets, and fresh small plates.

Des Moines’ B-Well, Billy Weathers, conceptualized and opened this bar, offering an atmosphere founded on community + excellence. Here is a bit behind the interior design that went into this cocktail bar.

The Contrary’s back area is designed for ample acoustics to host live music and DJ sets. We rounded this conversation pit out with velvet sofas and stools to allow for all accommodation. Sound panels and sexy sconces line the walls, and texture takes place in the carpet and wallpaper selections.

This project, like all INIDE HOUSE endeavors, doesn’t aim to stay safe in a cut-and-dry commercial space. We think we nailed the effortlessly sexy, timeless, and moody atmosphere with intention behind each fixture, swatch, and texture chosen. Floral arrangements from Wildflower, a local luxury flower boutique, accompany the space.
