Our Thoughts on Updating A Traditional Home

Paint color: Urbane Bronze by Sherwin Williams

In an era of sleek modern designs and rapidly changing architectural trends, the allure of old homes often gets overshadowed. However, there's something truly magical about preserving the characteristics of an old home, rather than falling to the temptation of tearing it down or transforming it into a modern masterpiece. These are a few of our thoughts + advice as you go to update your older home.

Preserve Character — because trends are temporary

Did you notice we all painted our walls a stark white in 2020? Remember the 2012 chevron taking over every curtain, pillow, and rug? While jumping on an up-and-coming fad seems so luring at times, we find it so worthwhile to take your time. If it’s something speaks to your soul in a lasting way— do it. But be in no rush, because before you know it that 90’s oak wood will be all the rage again!

Embrace the charm! — it’s a balancing act

As glamorous as a newly-renovated space can feel, there is something so long lasting about a home that has kept its bones. For the Waldron project, we decided to paint over the fireplace oak wall rather than tear down anything structural. The Urbane Bronze paint color gave the space a modern feel and balanced the warm hues of the existing home. We added some contemporary accents to harmonize with the traditional elements.

Old & New — mixing keeps it timeless

Finding harmony with the old and the new is an element we focus on in every room. We’re all about mixing styles, and working with a traditional home gives us all the more opportunity for that. New floors in the living area were put in, but the original windows were kept the same. A contemporary, geometric rug was put under the tufted, distressed sofa. All of this comes together to create a timeless harmony that refreshes the space.

We hope these thoughts let you consider how to best go about updating your home in future endeavors. We’re always in the studio should you want some input!
